What IS thread count, anyway? Technically, it’s the number of threads running horizontally and vertically in one square inch of fabric. We hate to burst any bubbles, but forget everything you know or thought you knew about thread count! The truth is, a quality, down-proof thread count will range from 280 to 485. “Why so low” you ask? We like to answer with the old saying “Less Is More”. When many fine strands of thread are twisted together (creating a “high” thread count), you are left with a looser weave than that of a single, thicker strand of thread. When a weave is too loose, it also means it's too fine and delicate to contain down clusters. The effect? The down will leak out and/or the stitching will weaken over time; causing a cloud of fluff to fly all over your bedroom!
At Ogallala Comfort, our down-proof fabric is not a spray-on coating that dissolves after a few washes. We only settle for fabric that is Oeko-Tex certified and light-in-weight to allow maximum loftiness of the down. While quality down-proof fabric does not come at a bargain price, the Oeko-Tex certification assures that the fabric ticking was manufactured to the highest environmental standards in the world. Our down-proof fabrics are tightly woven, durable, and breathable due to a non-toxic technique of heat and pressure which seals up the gaps in between the weave. BEWARE of “Dry Clean Only” down bedding! Most likely, this labeling means the bedding has a spray-on down proof coating and is finished incorrectly. Therefore, a “Dry Clean Only” labeled-product will result in the leakage of down –regardless of the cleaning process.
