1891: Wonderland

The eclectic and classic designs of Dorothy Draper, where stripe and floral prints lived together in harmony and where no floor was complete without a checkerboard design, serve as the inspiration for this collection. In 1923, Dorothy Draper began her career as one of the first women to take the design world by storm, creating an industry unto herself with furniture, fabrics and books all touting the advantages of ‘Draperism.’ “She was the first to say that everything didn’t have to exactly match, that it was okay to pair a striped wall with a floral chintz chair and have it look fantastic. Her outlook on design is very similar to what we aim for with our 1891 by SFERRA brand, where every item coordinates but does not necessarily match,” says Aaron Stewart, Creative Director. “She also espoused the idea that design doesn’t have to be stuffy or expensive. Dorothy Draper felt that decorating should be fun, and we certainly agree.”
